Walsall African Caribbean Black History Project - Wacbhp
About Walsall African Caribbean Black History Project (wacbhp):
The Walsall African Caribbean Black History Project (wacbhp) was created by 4 history enthusiasts who came together in 2000 to learn, document and promote the stories of our ancestors - with a specific interest in African Caribbean history; told from a local perspective (Walsall) and to share this with the world. Our books are based on the lived experiences of people, who have come to be known as "the Windrush generation". These are the pioneers who answered the call from British Government and industry to migrate to the UK to help rebuild the country after the 2nd World War and to support the newly created NHS, transport (buses and rail) etc. They heeded the call from all over the West Indies (Caribbean) during the 1950's and 1960's. Our books are together "local", "national" and "international". Whilst it focuses on the people who settled in Walsall, a town in the heart of the UK; our books contribute to both British and Caribbean history and, as such, world history. Our books focus the years after migration. Race and racism. Challenge. Opportunity. Endurance. Hard work. The universal story of "sweat, tears and triumphs". |
Our first book "Through Sweat and Tears - the African Caribbean Presence in Walsall" was published in 2001 in collaboration with, as publisher, The Walsall Local History Centre, Walsall Council. We are indebted for the creation of this book to Ruth Vyse who, at that time managed the Centre.
Our 2nd book "Through, Sweat, Tears and Triumphs - Reflections on the Caribbean Presence in Walsall" is an updated and extended edition of the 1st book. It explores the emergence of notable people and organisations in Walsall in the first decades following arrival to the Windrush generation in UK. This book was published by Marcia Spence Publishing House in 2017 and made possible by our main partner and main contributor, Walsall Housing Group (Who) - to whom we are thankful. Since publication of the 2nd book, wacbhp has embarked on a UK Book tour where the publication has been enthusiastically received across the country including Birmingham, London, Leeds, Nottingham etc. The book now has a readership that includes many countries including the Caribbean, USA , Australia. A number of articles have been written about the book including in the magazine "Brummagem" published by the notable UK Historian Carl Chin- see below. What next: 2021 and beyond will see our books go further global! Sharing the book across Canada and the Netherlands. |
